The genocide of Armenians - speaking with Swedish eyes
by Göran Gunner, co-author of Longing to Ararat
Contemporary Swedish diplomats, missionaries, travelers, politicians and writers have left
details of what happened during the genocide of the Armenians 1915-1916 and the
massacres from 1894 to 1896. The testimony is also a lot of work to rescue survivors
and refugees. A military spoke of "the annihilation of the Armenian nation," a
missionary described it as an attempt to "exterminate a whole nation." Sven Hedin wrote about
"Appalling atrocities" and Hjalmar Branting used the word genocide. In the Swedish
material is detailed testimony about appalling atrocities and murders during
attacks against Armenian places of residence. Overall, the Swedish material, a clear picture
of the genocide suffered by Armenians and other Christian minorities in the former
Ottoman Empire.
